CNC and Manual Lathes
CNC Lathes are the future of turning, that's for sure, however, manual lathes are often easier to accept giant parts that can be 36" or bigger. Many CNC lathes have a Shroud that cathes coolant and chips as the machine works. This Shroud is often a problem when mounting large parts. Open engine Lathes are the answer on occasion just as the talent of the machinist has waned as an important factor in high precision machining.

You can see the leg of the giant crane needed to lift the end plates from the HAAS SL40 Lathe. John's End plates have given him a name at Los Alamos. When LANL see somehting they like , they seem to stick with it.

The End Plates are Very Large as you can see in the photo below.

Some Work has to be done on the Older lathes. Other work has to be done on a precision lathes. Check the old CNC display. It still works perfectly and the Assembler-Like G-Code programming language is still the industry standard.

Some operations are not right for any machine. We can improvise as well as anyone too!.
